This review paper presents a comprehensive scientometric and meta-analytic examination of the research productivity of Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) chemical sciences laboratories over the past three decades. CSIR, the largest publicly funded research and development organisation in India, operates several premier chemical sciences laboratories, including the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), and the North-East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), among others. The present study synthesises findings from published scientometric analyses spanning 1990 to 2023, drawing upon bibliometric indicators such as publication output, citation impact, h-index, collaborative networks, journal distribution, subject category mapping, and international co-authorship patterns. The analysis reveals consistent growth in publication volume, a marked increase in high-impact journal contributions post-2005, significant interdisciplinary collaboration, and an evolving shift towards applied chemistry, drug discovery, materials science, and green chemistry. The study also identifies persistent challenges related to citation gap, resource distribution asymmetry across laboratories, and limited industry–academia linkage. The findings offer strategic insights for research administrators, policy makers, and institutional planners seeking to strengthen CSIR's global scientific footprint in the chemical sciences domain. |
